# Creating Buildings

BESS allows the creation of multiple buildings, primarily so that projects completing Section J energy modelling can enter these by building. Create your building by giving it a name and entering the building height and footprint.

Building height is the number of levels including ground floor and excluding basements. It is the same test of storeys used in the planning system. It does not generally include roof terraces or roof plantrooms.

Building footprint is the area of the building when viewed in plan. It includes from ground level and above so normally excludes basements. Where a basement is partly above ground, the area above ground should be included in the footprint area.

Dwellings and non-residential spaces are assigned to the relevant building in the next table. If you need to delete a building, first ensure it does not have any assigned dwellings or spaces.

For projects upgrading to BESS version 6, building(s) will need to be entered. All other project inputs are saved and scores will recalculate once the building is entered.
