# 56.03-1 Compact and walkable neighbourhoods objectives (opens new window)

  • To create compact neighbourhoods that are oriented around easy walking distances to activity centres, schools and community facilities, public open space and public transport.

  • To allow easy movement through and between neighbourhoods for all people.

# Summary

Excellence is awarded where land is set aside for a mini-supermarket or similar local shop, and the zone permits the land use term 'Shop' as defined in Clause 73.03 of the Victoria Planning Provisions.

A supermarket is included under the broader 'Shop' category in the VPP nesting diagram. Most subdivisions are in the General Residential Zone, where a shop may be allowed with a planning permit. Other suitable zones include Mixed Use and Commercial zones, which more readily support retail uses.
